About Classic Story Shelf

Classic Story Shelf is a free collection of twenty Aesop fables — The Tortoise and the Hare, The Lion and the Mouse, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and seventeen more — retold in our own words for today's kids. It's part of The Active Home, a small collection of free learning games and activities for families.

Inside every story

Read — the fable in short, friendly paragraphs, with optional read-aloud (tap a paragraph to hear it, with highlighting as it goes) and word helpers for trickier vocabulary.

Quiz — three gentle questions about what happened and what the story teaches, plus the fable's moral in plain words.

Put it in order — a sequencing game: arrange the story's four big moments in the order they happened.

Worksheet — every story has a print-ready worksheet (the story, questions with room to write, and an answer key) for classrooms, homework, and kitchen-table discussions.

About the stories

The fables are attributed to Aesop and are many centuries old, so the original stories are in the public domain. The retellings, questions, and worksheets here are original to The Active Home. No recordings, pictures, or text from other sources are used — read-aloud uses the voice built into your device.

Privacy, in short

Classic Story Shelf has no ads, no accounts, and no tracking, and nothing your child types or taps is sent anywhere. The one site-wide policy covers the whole of The Active Home: Privacy Policy.
