About the game
Fractions, forged in fire
Fraction Forge is a free fractions game for grades 3–5 set in a blacksmith’s forge. Heat the bars, watch the parts glow, and work through six workshops — from naming your first fraction to adding and subtracting with confidence.
What it is
- A forge for fractions. Fraction bars are metal ingots, and the parts that glow hot are the fraction — so every question starts with seeing what a fraction means before naming it.
- Six workshops (levels), from naming a glowing fraction to placing fractions on a number line, comparing them, finding equivalent fractions, and adding and subtracting.
- Stars for every level. Earn up to three stars per workshop; progress is saved on the device — no accounts, nothing sent anywhere.
How to play
- Ten questions a round. Two tries each, with a hint after the first miss and a worked explanation (and the bars shown) after the second.
- 1. Name it — what fraction of the bar glows? 2. Forge it — tap parts of the bar to heat exactly the given fraction, then check.
- 3. Number line — tap where the fraction belongs on a line from 0 to 1 cut into equal parts. 4. Compare — choose >, < or = between two fractions.
- 5. Equivalent — find the fraction with the same glowing amount, or fill in the missing number. 6. Add & subtract — combine or take away fractions with the same size parts.
Skills and classroom notes
- Standards. Built around Common Core 3.NF.A.1–3 (what fractions are, fractions on the number line, equivalence and comparison), 4.NF.A.1–2 (equivalent fractions and comparing) and 4.NF.B.3 (adding and subtracting like fractions).
- Models before symbols. Bars and number lines carry the meaning; equivalent fractions are introduced as the same glowing length with a new name, made by multiplying top and bottom by the same number.
- Free, always. No ads, no sign-up, nothing to buy. Progress is stored only in this browser.
