Up the mountain, one key at a time
Typing Trail is a free keyboarding game for grades 2–6. Learn the home row, top row and bottom row one lesson at a time, then type whole words and sentences — every correct key walks your hiker closer to the summit.
What it is
- A hike up a mountain. Your hiker climbs a trail toward the summit flag, and every correct key moves the hiker one step up. Wrong keys just wobble the typing box — there are no lives to lose.
- Seven lessons that build one row at a time, plus a 1-minute speed test whenever you want to check your pace.
- A keyboard that teaches. The on-screen keyboard lights up the next key in its finger color, and the hint line names the finger to use — left pinky, right middle, and so on.
How to play
- Start with your fingers home. Rest them on A S D F and J K L ;. Lessons 1–3 stay on the home row (left hand, right hand, then both, with real words like salad and flag).
- Then climb: Lesson 4 adds the top row, Lesson 5 the bottom row, Lesson 6 is a Word Hike using every row, and Lesson 7, Sentence Summit, uses full sentences with capitals and punctuation — hold Shift with the hand opposite the letter.
- Watch two numbers: 🎯 accuracy and ⚡ words per minute. Stars are earned for accuracy (three stars at 95% or better), and your best speed for each lesson is saved on the device.
- Best on a real keyboard — a computer or Chromebook. On a tablet, tap the typing box to bring up the keyboard. In the speed test, the timer starts with your first key and runs for 60 seconds.
Skills and classroom notes
- Touch-typing foundations. Home-row anchoring, one finger per key, and eyes on the text instead of the keys — the habits that make keyboarding stick.
- Accuracy first. The game’s own advice, shown on every results screen: slow down and aim for accuracy, and speed comes with practice.
- Original material. All practice words and sentences were written for this game (the summit sentences are about hiking, camping and the outdoors).
- Free, always. No ads, no sign-up, nothing to buy. Stars and best speeds are stored only in this browser.
